AMPARO Advocacy recognises and values the unique and voluntary contributions made by its members. Members are people who agree with and support AMPARO Advocacy’s mission statement and who have joined the organisation formally in line with our constitution.

What members do for AMPARO Advocacy?

  • Take responsibility for the governance of AMPARO Advocacy by becoming a Management Committee Member
  • Keep the organisation grounded in the reality of life for many people from non-English speaking backgrounds with disability
  • Inform the systems advocacy efforts of AMPARO Advocacy by sharing their stories and experiences.
  • Contributing their time and energy by participating in strategic focus groups and sub-committees
  • Inform and determine, within the established framework, the Strategic Planning and Annual Priority Setting.

 What AMPARO Advocacy offers its members?

  • A way of meeting and working with people from many different cultural backgrounds; people that share a concern for, and interest in, the lives of all people from non-English speaking backgrounds with disability.
  • Opportunities to learn about social advocacy principles and the difference advocacy can make in the lives of people from non-English speaking background with disability.
  • Opportunities to generate strategies that will most effectively make a sustainable difference for all people from non-English speaking backgrounds with disability.
  • Experiencing a sense of purpose in support of common values.
  • Learning and experiencing how to govern an organisation
  • Sharing food and celebration
  • Developing common bonds and friendship

The membership of the AMPARO Advocacy has no limits on size and consists of ordinary members and other classes as follows-

  • Ordinary membership shall be open to people from a non-English speaking background with disability. Ordinary members have voting rights and are eligible for management committee membership
  • Associate members shall be open to all people who support the mission and objects of the Association and who apply for and are accepted for membership of the Association. Associate members have voting rights and are eligible for management committee membership.
  • Organisational membership is open to organisations who are allies of the Association and do not have voting privileges.
  • Honorary Life membership is offered, via nomination and election, to individuals from either the ordinary or associate membership category.
  • Staff membership shall be open to current staff, however they do not have voting privileges and are not eligible for management committee membership.
